Sway Back Posture and Its Causes

The lower back is more likely to have chronic pain and discomfort comparing to any other part of your body. Low back pain actually affects about 80% of the population who are IT workers, especially.

The swayback posture is a specific type of poor posture which triggers lower back pain. People with a swayback posture get curves in the spine that are exaggerated, forward-squeezing hips and the look of standing back. You need to consult a pain management doctor to get proper treatment.

Here's a look at what the swayback stance is and the potential reasons behind it.

Swayback- What Is It?

It is a dysfunction of the posture that leads to a curved spine in the following ways from normal posture:

  1. Your pelvis and hips are tilted to the front of your head.

  2. An exaggerated curve inward of your lower back or lumbar spine results from the forward shift of your pelvis; this is known as lordosis.

  3. Also, in your upper back it causes an exaggerated external curve; this is called kyphosis.

The asymmetry of your pelvis and spine with a swinging posture can increase the risk of back and hip injury. It can also cause musculoskeletal injuries in your body at different parts, such as in your neck and shoulders, which are forced into a compromise position.

Poor posture can pressure your organs internally as well. This could lead to problems like:

Heartburn

Incontinence

Constipation

Is Swayback Identical to Lordosis?

Lordosis is your backbone's exaggerated curve. Some lordosis near your lumbar spinal cord is normal, but too much curvature is often called swayback.

Lumbar lordosis is the most common type of lordosis. Here your lower back is curved more than it should.

One of the main components of swayback posture is lumbar lordosis. Some people can have lordosis without sweeping posture, however, if they do not have other characteristics.

Why Does It Happen?

Tight hamstrings and weak abdominal muscles, back muscles, and laxity within the ligaments in the pelvis or back are often the cause of a swayback posture.

Sitting for long periods of time can tighten these muscles. Over time, they can become rigid and weak if they are not properly stretched. You can also impact your stabilizing muscles such as your glutes and abdominal tissues for many hours in poor posture. This may give you weakness in some time if these muscles are not activated — and this may also lead to a sweeping posture.
