Treatment seeks to help relieve pain and other symptoms caused by the herniated disc in each patient. In order to obtain this objective, each patient's treatment plan must be personalized and tailored to the pain's source, the level of pain, and the patient's distinct symptoms.

Before undergoing spine surgery for a herniated disc treatment, patients are usually recommended to start with conservative care (non-surgical) treatment. This is generally true, but some patients may benefit from early surgical intervention. A good example of this is when a patient develops progressively severe arm or leg weakness due to compression of the spinal nerve roots from a herniated disc. With early surgical intervention, there is the potential to stop the progression of any neurological problems, which would result in nerve healing in an optimal environment. If nerve damage occurs due to surgical intervention, it can be permanent.

Urgent surgical intervention is also required for a number of relatively rare conditions. Cauda equina syndrome, which can be manifested by a gradual weakening of the legs and/or sudden problems with the intestines and/or urinary tract, should be treated as a medical emergency and managed with surgery.

Both traditional and surgical treatments are effective

There are conservative and non-invasive treatments that can help reduce pain and discomfort for people who have lumbar and cervical herniated discs. After some trial and error, the appropriate combination of treatments must be found. Patients may try a single treatment or, alternatively, they may combine different herniated disc treatments in order to see better results. Similarly, treatments that are solely dedicated to relieving pain (such as painkillers) could enable patients to better endure other treatments like any physical therapy. Foam rolling, along with physical therapy, is an excellent way to rehabilitate patients while also teaching them about good body mechanics like proper lifting technique.

Patients will choose conservative treatments if conservative treatments reduce their pain and discomfort. In the case of severe pain accompanied by significant loss of function, surgery may be chosen as an option.

Herniated lumbar discs

  • Conservative course of action with respect to treating a herniated disc

  • To minimize the patient's discomfort and pain, the following conservative treatment options can be employed for the first six weeks.

  • To assist in relieving nerve root pressure, exercise, physical therapy, and gentle stretching can be used.

  • Cold and heat treatments for pain management

  • Deception (such as chiropractic manipulation)

  • IBUPROFEN, NAPROSYN, or COX-2 inhibitors for pain relief

  • Analgesics for the alleviation of pain
