As we age, we tend to find that our bodies don’t always function the same way they used to in our twenties. Our bodies begin to ache and creak and we often find that we are less capable of doing the things we love to do. If you find that you’re one of the many people dealing with this sort of issue and that these pains are predominantly radiating from your joints (where bones connect in the body), then there is a good chance you’re dealing with some form of arthritis.

This begs the question: what exactly is arthritis?

The answer is not quite as simple as some may believe. This is because there are different types of arthritis, different symptoms that arise as a result, and different ways to go about treating it. If you think you may have arthritis, then you need to understand the different types and what they do. The two main types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA)

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, and it comes from a degeneration of the cartridge or disks separating the bones. This degeneration allows the bones within the body to rub against each other, which can be extremely painful and bring on both inflammation and bone spurs.

The development of osteoarthritis can come about in a number of different ways, from playing sports that require repetitive motions to simply being overweight. Additionally, osteoarthritis can be present in a host of different places throughout the body, such as:

  • The knees

  • The spine

  • The fingers

  • The hips

Osteoarthritis is more common in elderly individuals than it is in youths because those of an older age have typically placed more stress on their bodies.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)

Rheumatoid arthritis, while similar in name and even certain symptoms, is a significantly different condition than osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that spreads throughout the body and forces your immune system to attack its own tissues. The disease destroys the lining of one’s joints, but can also affect other external and internal areas of the body, as well. Symptoms that often come as a result of rheumatoid arthritis include:

  • Swelling and inflammation

  • Stiffness

  • Limited motion

  • Fatigue

  • Fever

  • Dry eyes and mouth

  • Lumps beneath the skin

While rheumatoid arthritis can strike at any age, women tend to be more susceptible to the disease than men. Prevalence also tends to increase with age.

There are many ways to treat arthritis without drugs or medicines. If you think you may be dealing with a form of arthritis, there’s absolutely no reason to delay.
