Sway Back Posture and Its Causes

Swayback- What Is It?

  3. Also, in your upper back it causes an exaggerated external curve; this is called kyphosis.

Is Swayback Identical to Lordosis?

Lordosis is your backbone's exaggerated curve. Some lordosis near your lumbar spinal cord is normal, but too much curvature is often called swayback.

Lumbar lordosis is the most common type of lordosis. Here your lower back is curved more than it should.

One of the main components of swayback posture is lumbar lordosis. Some people can have lordosis without sweeping posture, however, if they do not have other characteristics.

Why Does It Happen?

Tight hamstrings and weak abdominal muscles, back muscles, and laxity within the ligaments in the pelvis or back are often the cause of a swayback posture.

Sitting for long periods of time can tighten these muscles. Over time, they can become rigid and weak if they are not properly stretched. You can also impact your stabilizing muscles such as your glutes and abdominal tissues for many hours in poor posture. This may give you weakness in some time if these muscles are not activated — and this may also lead to a sweeping posture.
