The Main Causes Behind Herniated Disk Pain

Lower back pain is most often caused by a problem with your spine or hip, but it can also be caused by an issue with your internal organs. This blog offers information on the signs and symptoms, as well as possible causes, of severe acute lower back pain and suggestions for herniated disk treatment.

Range of possible side effects when dealing with lower back pain that is particularly severe:

Lower back pain that is sudden and severe might affect either one side or both. It's also possible that you're experiencing pain only on one side of your lower back. One or more of the symptoms listed and characteristics accompany acute lower back pain:

  • Motion slows down. Extreme lower back pain is frequently accompanied by tightness and spasm in the muscles that surround it, resulting in stiffness and a reduced range of movement.

  • Nerves act as conduits for the radiation. If you have an issue with your spinal nerve roots in your lower back, you may experience a shooting pain down your leg.

  • Neurological impairments are one of the side effects. Neurologic symptoms such as numbness, tingling, a pins-and-needles sensation, and a general weakness in the leg may accompany lower back pain caused by irritation or compression of the nerves (s).

Specific postures or activities, such as standing, sitting, walking, and lying down, might exacerbate or alleviate these symptoms. There may be a few days or weeks of relief from spinal pain, but it can become crippling and interfere with your day-to-day activities.

Significant lower back pain can be caused by a variety of different musculoskeletal conditions.

Injuries to the structures that provides support to your back, such as your ligaments, muscles, joints, and intervertebral discs, are the most prevalent causes of acute lower back pain.

Strain on the muscles

In the event of a strained muscle (muscle strain injury), your lower back may experience severe cramping, spasm, and stiffness. Localized discomfort in the left or right lower back may also be a symptom of this injury. Lower back muscle strain symptoms can include the following:

  • Acute, shooting pain that gets worse when you move

  • Standing or walking with difficulty

  • Going from a seated to standing or standing position causes sharp discomfort.

In most cases, the pain is alleviated by elevating your legs as you recline with support or while you lie down. Following the PRICE protocol may also assist in the healing of the torn muscle and the reduction of discomfort.

A herniated disc in the lower back

As shock absorbers, spinal discs support your upper body and provide a range of motion in your lower back. If one or more of your lower spinal discs herniates, it could irritate or crush a nearby spinal nerve root by leaking its inner contents. When an inflammatory cascade occurs, it can lead to a wide range of signs and symptoms, including:

  • Stiffness and discomfort in the lower back

  • A burning sensation in the buttocks, thigh, and/or calf when doing particular tasks, such as carrying heavy things or engaging in physical exercise

  • A stinging or aching sensation on the outside of the foot or under the heel

  • Leg ache, tingling, and a feeling of weakness

Sciatica is the medical term for these symptoms when they start in the sciatic nerve roots (L4 to S3) of your legs.

Anti-inflammatory drugs and specific forms of lumbar extension exercises may help reduce the symptoms of a herniated disc while also healing the disc itself. Severe neurological symptoms may necessitate additional, more intensive medical treatment.
