How to Control Herniated Disc Pain?

The spine bone is known as vertebrae. There are flexible and connective discs that behave like cushions. The healthy discs act like shock absorbers and help the spine to bend and move naturally.

When one disc is damaged it may tear down. A herniated disc often known as slipped disc and it takes place when a disc nucleus is ruptured. It makes the disc small and cushioning power decreases. When it happens, vertebrae rub against each other and grind as a result nerve roots get more pressure. Depending on the condition, a herniated can give mild to severe pain.

In any location of the spine, you may get herniated disc treatment. But mostly the problems start occurring in the lower back that is known as lumbar spine. Lifting, straining, wear and tear with age, injury and trauma are some of the common reasons of herniated disc.

Diagnosis

Diagnosing a herniated disc is a very simple and straightforward process. As a part of herniated disc treatment, two imaging tools are used for diagnosis – MRI and CT scans.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): In MRI scans, magnetic fields are used along with radio waves and a computer that take photographs of spine.

Computed Tomography (CT Scans) - The CT scans are used for making detailed pictures and it uses multiple x-rays.

Preventive Techniques

Right Lifting Technique

The right lifting technique helps people to prevent herniated disc. Incorrect way of lifting can put pressure on the spine and lower back. While lifting heavy objects, you should stand keeping your feet apart and then only bend your knees and hips and grasp the object. Then lift the object in a single steady motion, lift using your legs and straight your knees. Keep the back straight and do not twist while lifting.

The Right Shoes

Injury is one of the most common reasons of herniated disc. If you minimize the risk of fall by wearing the right pair of shoes, you will have less chances of injury and trauma followed by less risks of herniated disc. The right footwear will give you an excellent grip on the ground and reduced the risk of slipping. If you like to wear heels, go for heals not higher than one inch. It will give you stability and keep the spine in the right alignment. A too high heal forces the pelvis forward and make the spine to stay in an unnatural position. You can also buy a shoe with shock absorption quality.

Regular Exercise

There are two primary reasons of following daily exercise. First, it controls body weight. Obesity is one of the prime reasons of herniated disc problems as spinal discs cannot bear weight. Second, exercise helps to build muscles around the spine. Even the spinal discs become weak with age, but exercise gives it support to prevent injuries.
